What is the co-curriculum?

At Wallington County Grammar School we believe passionately in the importance of the co-curriculum as a means of creating a rich variety of learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The co-curriculum encompasses all the activities, societies, competitions, sporting and artistic opportunities that one would expect from a truly world-class education. The co-curriculum allows students the chance to pursue their own interests, to set their formal education in a context of employment and university aspirations and to embrace the wider ‘grand challenges’ of their future lives. It also helps students to develop skills and qualities, a ‘can-do’ attitude, an openness to new ideas and the drive to carry them to fruition that will help them to flourish in the future. By doing so, we aim to create aspirational pathways that begin from the moment a student arrives in Year 7 and stretch through their time in school and beyond.

How do I get involved in the co-curriculum?

There are many different ways in which students can become involved in the co-curriculum whilst in school. These include:

• The house system
• School sports
• Clubs and societies, including the Hutchins Society
• School Council
• Duke of Edinburgh Awards
• Charity events such as RAG week and the fashion and talent show
• School orchestra and ensembles
• Holding a student leadership position
• Working as a subject ambassador, anti-bullying ambassador or student mentor
• School Challenge and SMSC days

In addition, students are warmly encouraged to participate in activities outside school, such as club sport, scouts, local orchestras, volunteering etc.
