Monitoring of SEN at WCGS

The Local advisory board is responsible for ensuring high quality policy and provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs. The SEN local advisory board member meets the SENCo regularly to support the evaluation of SEN provision in the school. He also observes lessons, and attends CPD to further upskill his knowledge on SEN. Responsibility for monitoring and evaluating the progress of all pupils and for making strategic decisions which will maximise their opportunity to learn lies with the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team. The SENCo is the Deputy Headteacher. The role of the SENCo is to have overall responsibility for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (as defined in the 2015 SEN Code of Practice), including identification and coordination of provision. The SENCo will liaise with, advise and manage training for teaching staff relating to pupils with SEN and their needs, ensuring that individual plans written for pupils are put into practice. The SENCo is responsible for annual reviews and other key meetings about pupils with SEN. The SENCo manages the referral procedures to the Local Authority to request High Needs funding and/or an Education Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) when it is suspected that a pupil may have SEN which will require significant support. The SENCo is responsible for the evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of all additional interventions for pupils with SEN. The SENCo is responsible for liaising with other agencies and professions when necessary to support a pupil with SEN. The progress of the SEN students will be monitored by the class teacher, Subject Leader, Year Leader and Key Stage leader. 

Admissions

Applications for places at the school are welcomed from all children and we are committed to ensuring fair access to the school for pupils of suitable ability with SEN and disabilities. We will make appropriate adjustments for the entrance tests for any candidate with a disability in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, all regulations governing school admissions and with reference to JCQ Guidelines for Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments. There is a process for this and more information can be found on the Admissions pages of this website. Please ensure that you declare any disability your child has when completing the online registration form to sit the Selective Eligibility Test. If a student is successful in gaining a place at WCGS, a pre meeting will occur with the primary school SENCo, in which all supporting documentation is shared. Parents and the student also get a 1:1 tour around the school with the SENCo, and they get to meet key staff who will be supporting their son/ daughter. An individual education plan (IEP) will also be created, by parents, student and SENCo pre joining WCGS.

We want our students to be happy, healthy, ambitious, resilient and to have a high awareness of their diagnosis and how best to manage it”. Throughout a SEN student's time at WCGS they will receive social, emotional, mental and academic support to fulfill their potential.
